Black Hills RETREAT

Northeastern Wyoming

Focus Keywords: Rammed earth architecture, organic interior design, custom cabinetry design, furnishings, Black Hills modern home.

Project Narrative: This project was defined by the geography itself. The home features rammed earth construction—a rare technique that creates walls resembling sedimentary earth strata. Because of this powerful architectural statement, our interior scope was driven by a desire to complement, rather than compete with, the geology of the site.

The Design Approach: We selected a palette that echoes the rammed earth: warm wood tones for the flooring, natural stone, and custom cabinetry. We worked directly with William Ohs to design cabinetry that feels like an organic extension of the architecture rather than a separate installation, ensuring the wood finishes harmonized perfectly with the sedimentary layered design of the walls.

Key Details:

  • Asymmetry & Movement: We utilized lighting fixtures with asymmetrical profiles—including a living room centerpiece that feels suspended in motion—to break up the verticality of the room.

  • Material Continuity: In the bathroom, we installed large-format porcelain tile (12x48) that mimics the horizontal banding of the earth, creating a seamless visual link between the interior and the landscape outside.

  • Stone Integration: Natural stone is a through-line in our work, used here to ground the home in its Black Hills setting.
